This monthâs Small Business Spotlight shines on a cozy little gem right in the heart of HuntingdonâTastes of Home, located at 627 Washington Street.
Founded and lovingly operated by Tammy Hinish, Tastes of Home officially opened its doors on August 19, 2024, but the story started much earlier. What began as Tammy baking for friends and family quickly grew into something more when the demand outgrew her home kitchen. With a deep love for nostalgic recipes and comforting flavors, her bakery has become a beloved local favorite.
đȘ A Legacy of Baking
Tammyâs passion for baking was inspired by her mom, who always baked for Tammy and her brothers growing up. As she got older, Tammy joined her mom in the kitchen, eventually mastering and passing on those treasured family recipes to her own childrenâand now, to the entire community through her business.
Known especially for their scones and mini pies, Tastes of Home also offers custom orders and special limited-time holiday box deals that locals eagerly anticipate.
đ©âđł A Day in the Life
Behind the counter is a small but mighty team that keeps the bakery humming each day. Tammy typically arrives around 6:00 AM to begin prep. By the time the doors open at 8:00 AM, fresh scones, raisin-filled cookies, and mini pies are ready to go. Tammy and her team continue baking throughout the day, preparing for lunch service and fulfilling custom orders.
Family is truly the heart of the business. Tammyâs mom, Dana, is her right-hand baker. Her aunt Diane is the behind-the-scenes helper who handles dishes, soups, and whatever else is needed. On weekends, Becky handles the front counter so Tammy can stay focused in the kitchen. Tammyâs children, Paige and Tobias, also jump in when theyâre homeâhelping with baking, grocery runs, and even tech support!
đ Community at the Core
Tammy says the best part of running her own bakery is âgetting to bake whatever I want.â Sharing family recipes and connecting with customers over their favorite treats makes every early morning and long day worth it.
She also makes it a point to incorporate local ingredients when possibleâlike apples from nearby orchards and farmerâs markets. And if anyone in the area has extra beets, Tammyâs on the lookout!
Tastes of Home is proud to collaborate with other small businesses, tooâlike Downtown Joe, for whom Tammy bakes scones and cake pops.
đ„§ Fan Favorites & Future Plans
One of the most popular items in the shop is the raisin-filled cookies, baked by Dana using Tammyâs great-grandmotherâs recipe. As for a favorite item? Tammy canât pick just oneââEverything we make is so good!â
Of course, not every baking day goes perfectly. Tammy laughs about the times sheâs forgotten ingredients while trying to multitask between customers and recipesâbut like any great baker, she rolls with the punches and keeps going.
As she looks ahead, Tammy is excited to continue building out her holiday menu boxes and is planning to add salads to the lunch menuâsomething new for her little shop!
