Spring Cleaning Tips: How to Organize and Declutter Your Home

Spring is a time for new beginnings. It's a time to clean out the old clutter and make way for new beginnings! If you're looking to get your home organized and decluttered, then you've come to the right place!

Spring Cleaning Checklist

First and foremost, make a plan! This is probably the most important step in getting your home organized. You need to know what you're going to do and where you're going to start. Once you have a plan, it will be much easier to get started and stay on track.

If you're not sure where to begin, start by decluttering one room at a time. This can feel overwhelming, but it's definitely doable if you take it one step at a time. Tackle one room at a time and give yourself plenty of time to get the job done. I recommend creating four piles: keep, donate, sell, or trash.

Another great way to organize your home is to create designated zones for each activity. For example, have a specific spot for your mail, another area for toys, and so on. This will help keep everything organized and easy to find.

Don't procrastinate! The longer you wait to tackle that mess in the corner or clean out those closets, the harder it will be.

Cleaning Products Checklist

When it comes to spring cleaning, having the right supplies on hand can make all the difference. Here are some must-haves that will help you get the job done quickly and easily:

- A good vacuum cleaner: This is essential for getting rid of dust and dirt. Make sure you have a model that's suitable for your needs. My favorite is the Bissell Cleanview Rewind. This vacuum cleaner is AMAZING if you have dogs! My pups are short haired but this thing picks up ever little strand!

- A dust mop or duster: These are great for getting into those hard-to-reach places. I love to use my Swiffer after I vacuum and I follow that up with a good ole fashioned wipe down with my O-Cedar mop. This winning combo deep clean leaves my floors squeaky clean!

- A good all-purpose cleaner: This will come in handy for cleaning just about everything.

- A window cleaner: Keep your windows looking shiny and new with this handy tool.

- Furniture polish: Give your furniture a fresh coat of polish for a polished look.

- Carpet cleaner: If you have carpets, it's important to have a good carpet cleaner on hand. This will help get rid of any stains or dirt that's been ground into the fibers.

When it comes to spring cleaning, there are a few essentials that you'll want to have on hand. Vinegar, baking soda, lemon, essential oils, and microfiber cloths are some of my favorites! These items can help you clean just about everything in your home.

A Brief History of St. Patrick's Day: From Irish Origins to Modern Celebrations

March 17th is a special day for people all around the world who celebrate their Irish heritage, and for those who just enjoy a good party. St. Patrick's Day has been celebrated for centuries, and its origins are steeped in history and legend. In this blog post, we will take a brief look at the history of St. Patrick's Day and how it has evolved into the celebration that we know today. So put on your green clothes, raise a pint of Guinness, and join us as we explore the fascinating history of St. Patty's Day!

Origins of St. Patrick's Day

The history of St. Patrick's Day is a long and storied one, dating back to the fifth century AD. The holiday celebrates the life and accomplishments of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Legendary figure Saint Patrick was born in Britain in the late fourth century, and he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave at the age of 16. He eventually escaped and returned to Britain, where he became a priest and later returned to Ireland as a missionary. Saint Patrick is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland, and his teachings helped convert many Irish people to the new religion. In addition, Saint Patrick is said to have performed several miracles during his lifetime, including driving all of the snakes out of Ireland!

Although there are many legends and myths surrounding Saint Patrick, we do know that he was an important figure in Irish history. The anniversary of his death (March 17th) was celebrated as a religious holiday in Ireland for many centuries. Over time, the celebration gradually evolved into a more secular event, and today it is primarily known as a day to celebrate Irish culture and heritage. In addition to parades and other cultural events, St. Patrick's Day is also traditionally celebrated with food, drink, and music.

Leprechauns & Folklore

One of the most popular symbols associated with St. Patrick's Day is the leprechaun. Leprechauns are mischievous creatures from Irish folklore, and they are often depicted as wearing green clothes and hats. According to legend, leprechauns are known for hiding pots of gold at the end of rainbows. In recent years, the image of the leprechaun has become synonymous with St. Patrick's Day, and he is now a common sight on clothing, decorations, and other merchandise related to the holiday.

So why are leprechauns associated with St. Patrick's Day? One theory is that the symbol was originally used to represent pagan gods or spirits that were believed to inhabit the Irish countryside.

Over time, these pagan symbols were Christianized and became associated with Saint Patrick and the holiday that bears his name. Whatever the case may be, leprechauns are now an inseparable part of St. Patrick's Day tradition, and they are sure to bring a touch of magic to your celebrations!

Famous Irish People in History

Saint Patrick is not the only famous Irish person throughout history. Here are just a few other notable figures who have called Ireland home:

- Oscar Wilde: A celebrated playwright and author, Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin in 1854. He achieved international fame with his plays, including The Importance of Being Earnest, and he also wrote a number of poems and essays.

- James Joyce: Another renowned writer, James Joyce was born in Dublin in 1882. His most famous work is the novel Ulysses, which is considered to be one of the most important books of the 20th century.

- Michael Collins: A leader of the Irish independence movement, Michael Collins played a key role in securing Ireland's freedom from British rule. He was born in County Cork in 1890 and was assassinated in 1922.

- Bono: The lead singer of the rock band U, Bono was born in Dublin in 1960. He is widely acclaimed for his humanitarian work, and he has been nominated for numerous Grammy Awards.

Traditional Irish Foods

There are many foods that are traditionally eaten on St. Patrick's Day, and most of them are Irish in origin. Some of the most popular items include:

- Corned beef and cabbage: This dish is a classic example of Irish cuisine, and it is usually made with corned beef brisket or ham.

- Shepherd's pie: A savory pie made with ground meat and vegetables, shepherd's pie is a staple of Irish cuisine.

- Irish Soda bread: A type of bread made with baking soda as a leavening agent, soda bread is popular in Ireland and other parts of the British Isles.

- Guinness stout: A dark beer brewed in Dublin, Guinness stout is one of the most popular alcoholic beverages in Ireland.

Local Coffee Shops vs. Starbucks: Coffee Showdown

Do you prefer Starbucks to local coffee shops? New research suggests that people in the United States and Europe tend to think so.

According to a study in Public Health Nutrition, 47 % of adults surveyed in the United States and 25 % of Europeans said they would choose freshly brewed coffee from Starbucks over other options if offered. [1] In the past five years, sales for Starbucks have increased by 13% annually while sales at independent coffee shops (not part of chains such as Starbucks) grew by only 4%. [2]

This is because locals do not yet offer an experience on par with corporate establishments like Starbucks. Despite local shops' competitive pricing and a wide array of better quality offerings, consumers still opt for big names simply because they are more famous than local cafes.

Starbucks

is the top-selling coffee brand in the world with 16,000 retail locations in 55 countries. *

Starbucks is the top-selling coffee brand in the world with 16,000 retail locations in 55 countries.* [3]  They are also the largest coffee shop chain in the United States based on revenue. [4]  However, Starbucks's size does not always equate to better customer service or higher-quality coffee drinks.

In fact, some people consider Starbucks' drinks too bitter compared to local cafes that offer lighter roasts and more nuanced flavors. Some consumers have also accused Starbucks of under-filling their cups relative to local shops, overcharging for simple drinks like lattes made with whole milk instead of soy or almond alternatives, and repeatedly serving customers burnt or stale beans. [5]

Furthermore, it is hard to ignore the overwhelming amounts of waste created by disposable cups and lids. Starbucks produces 8,000 tons of paper and plastic waste annually (enough to fill three Olympic swimming pools), according to The Guardian. [6]

Starbucks is also known for its heavy-handed treatment of employees with low pay, few benefits, long work hours, and no paid maternity leave for most baristas who are not considered "full-time" workers. Despite this mistreatment, many employees feel obligated to stay due to their lack of other job opportunities—or because they have mortgaged their future on a degree that has left them drowning in student debt. [7]  Some even consider working at Starbucks part of their "American Dream" despite the company's flagrant disrespect for its employees.

In contrast, local coffee shops tend to create a more intimate atmosphere where everyone knows your name and offers a calmer setting in which to enjoy a cup of joe or even breakfast sandwiches. This might be why 50-75% of Americans with disabilities prefer local cafés over Starbucks for this very reason, according to disability advocates. [8]  Local cafes also hire a more diverse staff, provide more opportunities for advancement, and pay their employees more than Starbucks does.

Independent coffee shops are especially appreciated by those who wish to enjoy a fresh coffee with friends or family members. For example, local cafés might offer more seating (including wheelchair-accessible seating) and larger spaces for patrons to meet and socialize. They might even encourage people to linger for hours on end if they wish since they don't depend on high turnover rates like corporate chains do to remain profitable.

This is what makes local coffee shops friendlier than Starbucks, which also has an impact on the bottom line. According to one report, consumers spend approximately $15-$18 at local cafes vs. only $5-$7 per visit at Starbucks stores. [9]  Even though Starbucks offers free Wi-Fi just like most local cafes do, many people choose to sit at a local coffee shop instead of Starbucks because they can talk with friends and family without feeling rushed to leave.

In contrast, the dark ambiance of Starbucks is not conducive to talking or hanging out. When patrons walk into a Starbucks they are typically greeted by silence punctuated only by the sounds of beans being ground for their drinks rather than chatter among groups of friends who want to enjoy their time together over an espresso.

Local cafes also offer more options when it comes to food since most don't rely on pre-packaged snacks that contribute significantly toward plastic waste generation as Starbucks does. For instance, local cafés might serve baked goods from an in-house bakery while providing desserts from scratch using local produce whenever possible. They might even host an occasional live music event to showcase local talent for their customers.

Finally, by sipping on coffees from a local cafe you are supporting a local business, local staff, and local partners. Take pride in finding a local go-to spot for your next hot coffee or dessert knowing that you have helped put a child through ballet lessons or a paid for their jersey for the soccer team.

As you can see, there are several key differences between Starbucks and local coffee shops beyond what is served in your cup. Although Starbucks has become synonymous with coffee in America, there is a reason why it didn't originate here as local cafes did. If you value the taste of rich coffee and the camaraderie that comes with meeting new people, your money might be better spent supporting indie cafés instead of corporate chains like Starbucks.

If you are local to Huntington, PA, the Frugal Fashionita invites you to try the Downtown Joe coffee shop. This local gem serves a wide selection of specialty coffee, craft teas, and delicious light treats! Use the drive-thru for quicker on-the-go service!

Bacon is a type of pork that is cured and smoked. It is typically sliced thin and cooked until crispy. Bacon has a salty, smoky flavor and a slightly chewy texture. It is most commonly used as a breakfast meat, but it can also be used in salads, sandwiches, or appetizers.

History of Bacon

Bacon was first introduced to the world by the Romans. They would cure pork bellies with salt and then hang them to smoke over an open fire. In the United States, bacon became popular during the 1920s when it was served at speakeasies and nightclubs. Today, bacon is one of the most popular meats in the world!

There are many different types and flavors of bacon available on the market, including smoked bacon, Canadian bacon, pepper bacon, and turkey bacon. However, the most popular type of bacon is regular or streaky bacon.

Bacon is high-fat meat, but it is also a source of protein and iron. A three-ounce serving of cooked bacon contains about 18 grams of fat, six grams of protein, and 0.68 milligrams of iron.

Recipes

Bacon can be cooked in many different ways, including frying, baking, grilling, and microwaving. The most common way to cook bacon is by frying it in a skillet over medium heat until it is crispy.

Here are some delicious recipes that include bacon:

- Bacon-Wrapped Dates: Wrap pitted dates in bacon, secure with toothpicks, and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 to 20 minutes.

- Bacon Avocado Toast: Top toast with sliced avocado and crumbled bacon. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.

-Bacon Grilled Cheese Sandwich

-Chocolate Covered Bacon

- Bacon Cheese Dip: Combine cream cheese, cheddar cheese, sour cream, green onions, cooked bacon bits (or chopped fresh bacon), garlic powder, onion powder, hot sauce (optional), salt to taste. Serve warm or cold!

How To Cook Bacon Perfectly Every Time

Bacon is easy to cook, but it can be a little tricky. There are many different methods for cooking bacon, including frying in a skillet on the stovetop or baking in the oven. The best way to get a satisfying crunch of bacon every time is by using an iron skillet over medium heat and flipping frequently so that both sides brown evenly without sticking!

When you're finished with your bacon recipe, make sure you save any leftover grease from cooking because it makes great gravy! Grease has many uses around the house: lubricating squeaky hinges on doors/windows; greasing wheels of furniture that gets moved often like office chairs; as well as being used as fuel (as long ash has been removed) for lamps or candles.

Bacon is a delicious meat that can be cooked in many different ways and served with almost any meal. Whether you are making bacon-wrapped dates, chocolate-covered bacon, or just eating it straight from the package – there's something here for everyone!

Windows

Making sure that all of these areas are clean will help your home look nicer and also be safer for guests.

Checking Your Air Filters

If you don't change the air filter regularly, it can cause the HVAC system to work harder than necessary and increase your energy bills. Be sure to also clean the coils on the outside of your HVAC unit at least once a year.

One of the most common home maintenance tasks is changing air filters in heating systems like furnaces and heat pumps. This prevents dust from circulating through your home which can lead to respiratory issues such as asthma for those who suffer from breathing problems. Pennsylvania Gardening Tips: Top Ways to Grow Your Garden

The days are getting longer and the weather is starting to warm up – it's finally springtime! For gardeners in Pennsylvania, that means it's time to start planting. There are many different ways to grow a garden, so we've put together a list of our favorite gardening tips for Pennsylvania. Whether you're just starting out or you're a seasoned pro, these tips will help you be garden-ready this year!

Don't worry if you think gardening is difficult. There's no right or wrong way to do it! You may cultivate anything from a modest window garden to a sizable raised bed in your backyard. It just depends on what kind of space you have available, how much time and energy want to spend gardening and where your interests lie.

Getting Started

Start small with an easy-to-grow plant like tomatoes or peppers, then add in more challenging vegetables as you gain experience over time! If gardening isn't for you, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy springtime without planting anything at all – just get outside and enjoy the fresh air! If you're new to gardening, planting a new garden may seem like a daunting task. But don't worry – it's pretty easy! Here are a few tips to help you get started:

• Create a spring gardening checklist!

• Choose a sunny spot in your yard that gets at least six hours of sunlight per day.

• Plan ahead! Layout your garden ahead of time so you know what you'll be planting and where.

• Plant seeds in rows or clumps of three to five plants for easy harvesting later on down the line.

• Use mulch around newly planted seedlings to help protect them from frost damage until they're fully established this springtime gardening season!

Flower beds and gardening paths are the perfect way to add beauty as well as functionality to your yard. They're also great for people who have limited space but still want something beautiful! Just remember that these areas need regular maintenance too – it's not just about planting flowers once or twice per year anymore, so make sure you know what kind of gardening you're getting into before starting one yourself.

Keeping Your Garden Insect Free!

Bugs can be a real problem for the gardener, especially in Pennsylvania where springtime gardening is popular. This is because insects are attracted to warm weather and will start laying eggs as soon as it arrives, which means they'll often take over your plant's leaves before they've had a chance to grow.

One way to help prevent this is by using an organic gardening method like companion planting. This involves grouping plants together that have natural properties that either repel or attract insects, so you can have a garden full of beautiful flowers while keeping the bugs at bay!

Companion planting also helps improve soil health and assists in the growth of your plants. Some good combinations to try include:

- Basil and tomatoes: The strong smell of basil repels tomato pests like whiteflies.

- Nasturtiums and cabbage: Cabbage pests are repelled by the peppery taste of nasturtiums.

- Marigolds and aphids: Aphids hate the smell of marigolds, so planting them near other

- Carrots and onions

- Beans and corn

- Radishes and lettuce

If you are looking for a gardening project that will last all season long, why not try building a raised bed? These are perfect for people who have limited space or want to garden in an area that doesn't get a lot of sunlight. You can buy or build your own raised bed, and then fill it with a variety of soil amendments to create the perfect conditions for gardening.

Just make sure you're careful when planting near trees – their root systems can often compete with nearby plants for water and nutrients. And if you're not sure what type of gardening you want to do, try starting small by planting some vegetables (like tomatoes) in pots before expanding into larger beds!

If gardening isn't your thing but you still want to enjoy springtime outdoors, why not start a garden club? This is the perfect way for people who love gardening without all of the work involved with it to get together and share tips, ideas, and even plants! There are gardening clubs all over the state of Pennsylvania, so there's sure to be one near you. So what are you waiting for? Get gardening!

The first people to observe how the groundhogs behaved and whether or not they saw their shadows were German settlers in Pennsylvania. They would watch to see if the groundhogs saw their shadows or not, then use that information to predict when spring would arrive or if there would be four more weeks of winter.

A King's Legacy: How MLK Changed the World

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day! Today we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man and civil rights leader who dedicated his life to fighting for rights and equality for all Americans . He is remembered for his many speeches, including “I Have a Dream” which he delivered in Washington D.C. during the March on Washington in 1963 .

He was a Baptist minister and activist who led the African-American Civil Rights Movement in America during the 1950s and 1960s. His birthday, January 15th is celebrated as across the United States of America to honor his legacy.

MLK's Early Life

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta to a middle-class family. His father had three children from his first marriage and adopted another daughter as well as Martin’s mother after she married her husband. He became the pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in 1947 and went on to become president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957.

King's views on equality were shaped by his experience as a child. He was born into a segregated society and experienced racism firsthand. His family was also very religious and taught him to stand up for what he believed in. These early life experiences helped King become one of the most influential civil rights leaders in history.

He is best known for his speeches advocating for racial equality, such as "I Have a Dream," which he delivered at the March on Washington in 1963. The speech is recognized as one of the greatest orations in American history. King was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his work towards ending segregation and discrimination.

Sadly, King was assassinated on April 1968 in Memphis. His death led to the expansion of his ideals by other civil rights leaders such as Jesse Jackson and more violent protests across America. King's legacy lives on today, through the work of many different organizations dedicated to social justice all over the world.

Traditions

MLK Day is a time for everyone to remember Martin Luther King Jr.'s role in bringing Americans together during one of our country's darkest times.

In the years since his death, King's memory has been honored all over America. His birthday is a federal holiday and many events are held in his honor each year as well as displays of quotes from him on banners across cities as a longstanding tradition.

On this day Americans are encouraged to volunteer their time at a soup kitchen or food pantry, visit with friends or family members they have not seen for awhile, take care of themselves by doing something nice for themselves like taking a walk or reading a book, learn about someone new through reading that person’s autobiography or watching documentaries on them, remember those less fortunate than us by donating clothes we no longer wear to a charity, giving blood at an American Red Cross center or donate money to one of the many charities that are out there.

Another way Americans celebrate this national day is through service projects and volunteer opportunities. For example, Habitat for Humanity builds homes in America with families who may not have been able to purchase their own home otherwise. Volunteers work together on building sites all over the world helping people realize they can build better lives by themselves when given proper tools and resources needed to do so.

Happy MLK Day! Thank you for celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.! Let's continue working together to make his dream of equality for all a reality. #MLKDay2018 #MartinLutherKingJr #civilrightsleader #activist #nonviolenceactivism #NobelPeacePrize
